SINGAPORE: The netizens have spoken, and some Singaporeans say they want more. More Workers’ Party Members of Parliament, that is.
On Tuesday (April 8), party chair Sylvia Lim posted a photo on her Instagram account of all eight WP MPs at Parliament House, captioning the picture with “Not knowing if Parliament would sit again before the General Election, we decided to take a group photo at the library this evening. With Dennis, Ting Ru, Faisal, Gerald, Pritam, Jamus, and Louis. #WP”
The Workers’ Party shared the photo on Facebook, and both posts have received a lot of positive attention from social media users, many of whom are cheering the party on in the run-up to the next polls.
“Hope next photo will have more people!!!” one of Ms Lim’s IG followers wrote, getting this reply: “Yes! More WP in Parliament is best,” followed by a fire emoji.
“More of you guys soon!” another wrote, while an Instagram user wished, “Triple the numbers in next Parliament. Keep fighting!”
One called the MPs “WP’s Magnificent Eight.”
Some thanked the WP MPs for the work they’ve put in for the past five years, and others wished the party success in the upcoming elections.
“The team has done well and raised many challenges in Parliament. The team has faced challenges and overcome them one after another… As a Singaporean, I would like to thank you for your commitment to delivering what you promised in the last GE! I am so proud of you all,” another IG user chimed in.
“It looks like WP is ready and all set to conquer and win new GRCs and SMCs this coming GE! May the force and power be with you from the people!”
On Facebook, the most popular comment came from a supporter who said, “Certainly WP candidates will eventually occupy more seats in SG Parliament,” claiming that the “majority of Singaporeans are fond of WP” because of their proven record.
He made special mention of the MPs in Sengkang, He Ting Ru, Louis Chua, and Jamus Lim, whom he said have diligently helped residents whenever they’ve needed it. He added that Singaporeans need WP MPs in Parliament, especially at this time, “to debate and voice out unfairness” as people face the stresses brought about by high living costs, including housing and increased public transportation and public utility fees.
“We truly, certainly, definitely, and sincerely need WPs as MPs in SG Parliament!” he added.
“Proud to have leaders from the Workers’ Party, who truly represent the people’s voice. Your integrity and vision for a fairer society set an example for all,” another wrote.
One predicted that “After the election, the group photo will be larger,” while another wrote, “We will see everyone and more of your team when the next Parliament reopens.”
Last week, The Straits Times reported that The Workers Party (WP) is likely to contest in eight constituencies and field at least 17 new candidates in the upcoming General Election (GE).
The WP already holds two GRCs, Aljunied and Sengkang, as well as one Single Member Constituency (SMC), Hougang.
The report says that in addition to these, the party is expected to field candidates at Punggol GRC, East Coast GRC, Marine Parade-Braddell Heights, Tampines GRC, and Tampines Changkat SMC. /TISG
